Miriam Haskell Red and Black Chevron Bead Necklace
This is a very long beaded necklace by Miriam Haskell in a rarely seen design featuring tomato red glass beads and black glass chevron/arrow shaped beads. The sections are separated with lengths of small red beads and the large red beads are capped with black half circles. Some of these half circles have damage but it isn't immediately noticeable, so still very wearable.
The necklace was likely made in the early 1960s, judging from the design, the hang tag and the spring ring clasp.
It's signed on the hang tag, 'MIRIAM HASKELL'. The necklace fastens with the Haskell tabless spring ring clasp.
Miriam Haskell started her company as a hotel gift shop in New York City in 1926. We don't know if she ever designed any of the jewellery her company produced but she was well known as an intelligent business woman. The greatest strength of any business is its employees and soon after founding the business Miriam Haskell employed Frank Hess as the jewellery designer.
Their jewellery was very popular in high status circles at the time and is highly collected today. The jewellery often reflects natural themes like flowers and vines and uses an array of materials from wood to glass and plastics and the ever popular baroque pearls. The jewellery is so popular that fakes abound. Any piece listed on this site as Miriam Haskell will have been carefully reviewed and researched. The earliest pieces, up to the late 1940s, were unsigned.
How do you rate the condition of a piece?
Excellent - No visible flaws to note but items may exhibit some signs of age related wear
Very Good - Some visible flaws which aren't considered to impair the wearability of the piece
Good - Some more notable flaws but the piece is still in collectible condition
All items are vintage and have lived a previous life, therefore signs of age related wear are to be expected. I do my best to bring attention to any faults in the description and by using the condition scale.
