Miriam Haskell Egyptian Clip Earrings

These Egyptian style clip earrings are from the Miriam Haskell company and likely made in the 1970s as part of the Lawrence Vrba Egyptian revival line of jewellery.  Each cream coloured ceramic disc features an Egyptian mask which has been decorated in dark blue, green and golden paint.  The oval discs are covered in an imperfect clear glaze and mounted on a gilt metal backing.  Each earring is different because they have been decorated by hand.

The earrings fasten with a Haskell specialty clip mechanism with a lever clip as well as a screw fitting to allow a tight but comfortable fit.

They are in very nice vintage condition with some small areas of tarnish to the back.  There is a very tiny chip to the clear glaze on one of the earrings, however it is only visible under 10x magnification, and mentioned only for thoroughness.

The earrings are signed, stamped 'HASKELL' on the clip arm and 'MIRIAM HASKELL' on the part of the clip that attaches to the back of the earring.  The clip mechanism patent number, which was granted in 1965, is on the round flat part.

Miriam Haskell

Miriam Haskell started her company as a hotel gift shop in New York City in 1926.  We don't know if she ever designed any of the jewellery her company produced but she was well known as an intelligent business woman.  The greatest strength of any business is its employees and soon after founding the business Miriam Haskell employed Frank Hess as the jewellery designer.

Their jewellery was very popular in high status circles at the time and is highly collected today.  The jewellery often reflects natural themes like flowers and vines and uses an array of materials from wood to glass and plastics and the ever popular baroque pearls.  The jewellery is so popular that fakes abound.  Any piece listed on this site as Miriam Haskell will have been carefully reviewed and researched.  The earliest pieces, up to the late 1940s, were unsigned.

How do you rate the condition of a piece?

Excellent - No visible flaws to note but items may exhibit some signs of age related wear
Very Good - Some visible flaws which aren't considered to impair the wearability of the piece
Good - Some more notable flaws but the piece is still in collectible condition

All items are vintage and have lived a previous life, therefore signs of age related wear are to be expected. I do my best to bring attention to any faults in the description and by using the condition scale.
