Monet Menagerie Spinneret Wire Butterfly Silver Tone
This butterfly brooch pin is from Monet's range of figural pins, designed in the 1960s, which they named Monet's Menagerie. The butterfly brooch features a top and bottom set of silver-coloured metal wire wings that are wired together at angles. These wires allowed the butterfly brooch to sit within another of Monet's ranges, the Spinnerets, which featured a number of brooches, all formed from metal wire. The butterfly was one of the most popular and was therefore made in the 1960s, and 1970s and variations were made in the 1980s. It came in three sizes, this one measures 5.5cm across the top of the wings and 3.5cm from the top tip to the bottom tip.
This brooch and the rest of the menagerie are featured in Alice Vega's 'Monet the Master Jewelers' book.
Condition: The condition is excellent. The plating is intact and there are only small blemishes which are only visible under magnification.
Monet
Monocraft, the Monet parent company, was founded by two brothers in Brooklyn in 1927. They started off creating monograms and began producing costume jewellery under the Monet name in 1937. Due to their high production quality, they eventually began producing pieces for Yves St. Laurent. In later years they also produced jewellery for Christian Lacroix. Because their metal pieces were triple-plated Monet's vintage jewellery tends to maintain its original finish better than most. Read more about Monet.
How do you rate the condition of a piece?
Excellent - No visible flaws to note but items may exhibit some signs of age related wear
Very Good - Some visible flaws which aren't considered to impair the wearability of the piece
Good - Some more notable flaws but the piece is still in collectible condition
All items are vintage and have lived a previous life, therefore signs of age related wear are to be expected. I do my best to bring attention to any faults in the description and by using the condition scale.
