Vintage Baroque Faux Pearl Wingback Earrings
These gorgeous earrings feature amazing, very large baroque faux pearls which are set within a gold plated, textured leaf border. The earring fittings are wingbacks as patented by Judith McCann. She submitted the wingback patent in 1944 so these earrings would have been made after that, likely in the late 1940s/early 1950s. At that time wingback earrings were seen to be very high end, so although these are not signed by a maker they are obviously of very high quality.
Please note that the pearls display some areas that are darker in colour than the main body. I don't believe these areas to be flaws, as they look to have been done to emphasize the irregular shapes.
Stamped 'L' and 'R' to indicate on which ear each earring should be placed. Also stamped with the wingback patent number.
How to wear wingback earrings:
Hold the earlobe with the thumb and index finger and slip the earring upward with the other hand so that the wire curves behind the ear. The aim of the wingback design was to distribute the weight of the earring more evenly allowing heavier earrings to be worn and allowing all earrings to be worn more comfortably.
Some things are too pretty to ignore. We try to focus on signed items but we'll sometimes include unsigned jewellery of high quality.
